The Assist Trophy

The Assist Trophy is a special, rare item from the Super Smash Bros. series that summons a character to aid the summoner. Assist Trophies work nearly identical to Poké Balls. However, no Pokémon come out of them, and once an Assist Trophy is grabbed, it is automatically activated, assuming the holder is standing on the ground, and not in a jump or attack. In Brawl, some Assist Trophies must be unlocked in order to be used.

Assist characters are generally invincible to all attacks in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though Starfy can be defeated and Lakitu can be momentarily stunned. In Super Smash Bros. 4, however, a large majority of Assist Trophy characters can be attacked in order to interrupt their attacks or in some cases be defeated.

The Assist Trophy acts similarly to the Poké Ball item in the Super Smash Bros. series.

List of Assist TrophiesEdit

Super Smash Bros. MeleeEdit

In the Gamecube preview issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, the Super Smash Bros. Melee article comments that Nintendo originally tried to implement Assist Trophies in Melee. The only trophy concept they gave details on was one that would release the ducks from Duck Hunt to fly around the stage and interfere with the fighters.

TriviaEdit

  • In canonical titles, the Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Pokémon series are the only series with playable character representatives to lack Assist Trophy characters. However, the former two series are the only two to lack assist characters in any capacity, as Pokémon can be spawned from PokéBalls.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Super Mario series is the only series with multiple Assist Trophy characters: Hammer Bro. and Lakitu.
  • Little Mac is the sole Assist Trophy character in canon titles to become a playable character in a later title.
