Azumanga Universe: Wrecking Crew is an action puzzle game featuring characters from the Azumanga Daioh franchises and spin-offs, based on the NES game Wrecking Crew developed by Azumanga Interactive, published by Bandai Namco Games, and co-published by Nintendo for the Bandai Revolution, and Bandai CD. The game is a sequel to Hikari's Wrecking Crew, which is included as a bonus in the game.
The Bandai CD version has voice overs in the gameplay and cutscenes.
The game's story mode features Chiyo Chan and Hikari are enjoying a picnic with their friends, only to discover that Saki and Sumire have started a construction campaign of building new hideouts. The construction is depriving the flora of sunlight and thus, Chiyo Chan and Hikari decide to demolish the new construction sites with their hammers. Along the way, they meet the characters they have to challenge against in the construction sites.
Unlike the original, in which the player's objective was to find ways to clear each level of all panels, Azumanga Universe: Wrecking Crew takes a more competitive approach, where two opponents are given their own sides to clean up. Each player must try to demolish as many panels as they can on their side, until the opponent's side is completely piled up, to win.
- Story mode: The main single player mode, where one controls Chiyo Chan or Hikari and travels through an overworld, entering each construction sites.
- Versus mode: A competitive mode where one can compete with a friend or the CPU. The player can choose between any characters that are unlocked from Story Mode.
- Tournament mode: Available after the player has cleared the main game once. Eight characters compete in a single-elimination tournament until only one remains and is declared the champion.
The game has 24 playable characters (except the Bandai Revolution version only has 12). However the Bandai CD version, in order to unlock the unlockable characters, you have complete Story mode as Chiyo Chan and Hikari since their stories are seperated unlike the Bandai Revolution version.
