Series MarioSymbol Super Mario
Debut title Super Mario Sunshine
System of origin Nintendo GameCube
Year of debut 2002

Bowser Jr. (Japanese: クッパJr. Kuppa Junia) is a major antagonist in the Super Mario series, and a veteran fighter to the Super Smash Bros. series. Bowser Jr. is the son of Bowser, and acts as one of the highest-ranked members of his Koopa Troop army, actively taking on the role of recurring boss in a number of titles.

Bowser Jr. is voiced by Caety Sagoian.

Bowser Jr.'s alternate costumes consist of the seven Koopalings (Japanese: クッパの手下 Kuppa no Teshita). Each of the Koopalings have different voice clips, announcer calls, and crowd chants. Though they are different characters, they all share a single moveset. Larry Koopa (Japanese: ラリー Rarī) and Lemmy Koopa (Japanese: レミー Remī) are voiced by Lani Minella; Morton Koopa Jr. (Japanese: モートン Mōton) is voiced by David Cooke; Iggy Koopa (Japanese: イギー Igī) is voiced by Mike Vaughn; Wendy O. Koopa (Japanese: ウェンディ Wendi); is voiced by Ashley Flannegan; Roy Koopa (Japanese: ロイ Roi) is voiced by Dan Falcone; and Ludwig von Koopa (Japanese: ルドウィッグ Rudowiggu) is voiced by David J. Goldfarb. Most of the Koopalings reuse voice clips from Mario Kart 8.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4[]

Notice Bowser Jr. is heavier (108 → 110).
Buff Bowser Jr. dashes slightly faster (1.424 → 1.5).

Description[]

Moveset[]

Special Move Description
Neutral Special Move Clown Cannon Bowser Jr. fires a large cannonball from the mouth of his Clown Car. The speed and power of the cannonball can be increased by holding the attack button.
Custom Variants Piercing Cannon The cannonball fired is smaller, but travels at a faster speed and through multiple fighters.
Gust Cannon Instead of a cannonball, Bowser Jr. fires a gust of wind that pushes Bowser Jr. backwards a short bit.
Exploding Cannon The cannonball can not be charged up, and fires a set, short distance forwards. The cannonball explodes at the end of its travel as opposed to crashing to the ground.
Side Special Move Clown Kart Dash Bowser Jr. transforms the Junior Clown Car into a kart and rushes forwards. Attempting to travel in the opposite direction will have the kart spin-out and deal slightly more damage and knockback.
Custom Variants Koopa Drift The kart takes slightly longer to transform, and travels slightly slower, but running into an opponent hits them multiple times.
Grounding Dash The kart travels at a slower speed and does not deal any damage, but hitting an opponent buries them.
Clown Roll Instead of transforming into a kart, Bowser Jr. runs atop a rolling Clown Car. The attack is faster and deals more damage, but it takes longer to stop the attack, and can not be controlled as easily, thus making it liable to a self destruct.
Up Special Move Abandon Ship! Bowser Jr. jumps out of the Clown Car, before it is fired downwards and explodes. After jumping out of the Clown Car, Bowser Jr. can swing a hammer to deal damage.
Custom Variants Meteor Ejection Bowser Jr. is fired forwards a fair distance, and the Clown Car is not fired as far downwards. Despite this, the explosion produces a meteor smash, thus making it easier to KO opponents.
Koopa Meteor Instead of Bowser Jr. launching himself upwards out of the Clown Car, he and the Clown Car are fired upwards before the Clown Car explodes and fires Bowser Jr. downwards at a fast speed. Though he can not attack with a hammer, Bowser Jr. produces a meteor smash should a fighter make contact with him.
Spring Shot Bowser Jr. is fired further upwards, but the Clown Car does not explode, instead just falling down to the bottom of the screen and dealing no damage.
Down Special Move Mechakoopa Bowser Jr. releases a Mechakoopa from a hatch on the bottom of the Clown Car. The Mechakoopa walks forwards until it hits a ledge, after which it turns around. Once it comes in contact with an opponent, it explodes, but will also do the same after a short time limit. It can be picked up by Bowser Jr. (and his teammates).
Custom Variants Impatient Mechakoopa The Mechakoopa is fired forwards and at a faster speed, but it explodes on contact with anything.
Big Mechakoopa The Mechakoopa is larger and deals more damage, but does not walk around for as long a time.
Meteor Mechakoopa The Mechakoopa is weaker when used on the ground, but when used in the air it falls straight downwards and deals more damage than usual as well as meteor smashes opponents.
Final Smash Shadow Mario Paint Bowser Jr. transforms into the shadowy doppelganger of Mario, and paints a giant X in paint on the screen. The X deals damage once touched, bouncing fighters around at the same time. After a short while, it disperses, knocking away all fighters.

Taunts[]

Direction Description
Up taunt Jumps up, sits on the rim of the Junior Clown Car, and exhales a tiny flame while chuckling.
Side taunt Pulls out a hammer and swings it around twice.
Down taunt The Junior Clown Car turns into its go-kart form, sports an angry expression while performing a donut, then returns to normal.

On-Screen Appearance[]

Bowser Jr. flies onto the stage in the Clown Car before making a taunting facial expression while waving to the camera.

Victory Fanfare[]

The victory fanfare used by both Bowser and his son in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U is reused for Super Smash Bros. Strife. The fanfare is an electric guitar cover of the level clear (flagpole) fanfare from Super Mario Bros..

This fanfare is shared with Bowser.

Victory Poses[]

All three of Bowser Jr.'s victory poses are reused from Super Smash Bros. 4.

  • Drives the Junior Clown Car around in its go-kart form while laughing, then stops and pulls out a hammer.
  • Gets out of the Junior Clown Car and rubs it with his right hand while smiling with his mouth closed.
  • Jumps out of the Junior Clown Car, hops in celebration a few times while laughing, then poses.

Trivia[]

  • According to an interview with Masahiro Sakurai, the idea to implement a ninth costume for player choice was included incredibly late in development. Due to there being only seven Koopalings (and thus only taking up eight spots), Bowser Jr.'s final recolour costume (which is ironically listed as #01 in the game's code) was added later than those of any other character's. As such, the final recolour costume reuses all textures from the Shadow Mario model that appears as Bowser Jr.'s Final Smash.
    • He also states that there was always a plan to include a ninth alternate costume due to ideas of having a nine player Classic Mode battle system. Though this idea never came to pass, as they had completed a number of costumes for other characters, they decided to add them in for player choice.
  • Bowser Jr. is one of the six playable characters to have alternate characters in the base of Super Smash Bros. Strife. The others being Greninja, Pac-Man, Isabelle, Toad, and Starfy.
