The EarthBound universe refers to the EarthBound series in reference to its representation within the Super Smash Bros. series of fighting games. The EarthBound series consists of three role-playing games created by Shigesato Itoi of APE Inc.. Set in the year 1990's (199X in EarthBound), the series follows themes deeper than those handled by most other Nintendo franchises. EarthBound is well known for having one of the most dedicated cult followings in video game history, with fans of the series translating the currently Japan-exclusive Mother 3, and going as far as to make a fourth entry into the series.

The EarthBound series is sometimes known by it's Japanese name "Mother" (stylized MOTHER; though also sometimes rendered as Mazā). The original Mother was only available in Japan until 2015, where it was released on the Wii U e-Shop under the name of "EarthBound Beginnings". Mother 2 was released in August 1994 in Japan, and ten months later in North America as "EarthBound"; with Europe seeing its first release of the game in 2013 on the Wii U e-Shop. The final entry into the series, Mother 3, has yet to be released outside of Japan, though several fan translation projects have surfaced and even been acknowledged by Nintendo.

Playable Character Edit

SSB64 Ness
Ness SSB head
Ness Ness is a thirteen-year old kid from the small town of Onett. Ness is the main protagonist of the second game of the EarthBound series (which is also named EarthBound). Ness was gifted PSI powers by a meteorite that crashed into a hill bordering Onett.

Music Edit

Track 24 Track 24 (unnamed) plays whenever Ness wins a match. It is an orchestrated version of the final notes of the Eight Melodies from EarthBound.

Super Smash Bros. Melee Edit

Playable Character Edit

SSBM Ness
Ness SSBM head
Ness Ness returns from Super Smash Bros., with several considerable nerfs. Ness, like all returning characters, has received a new special move in PK Flash. PK Fire, Ness' neutral special move, has since been moved to his side special move. Ness was originally supposed to be replaced with the protagonist of the then-upcoming Mother 3, Lucas.

Stages Edit

Onett SSBM
Eagleland:
Onett
Onett is the hometown of Ness. The stage consists of various buildings in the town, with the most prominent being the Drug Store located in the centre of the stage. Two canopies hung on the store act as semi-soft platforms, but fall down once stepped upon five times. Various taxis and other cars, as well as the Runaway Five's tour bus, rush through the stage, attacking all those near the road.
Fourside Melee
Eagleland:
Fourside
Among the various cities and towns visited in EarthBound, Fourside is the largest of them. Despite this, the appearance of the stage is based more closely on the city's parallel version of Moonside. Like Onett, Fourside consists of various buildings seen in the city, including the Dinosaur Museum, and the Monotoli Building. Occasionally, a UFO will float into the stage, and act as a semi-soft slippery platform.

Item Edit

MrSaturn SSBM
Mr. Saturn Mr. Saturn are a race of strange aliens that speak in strange symbols. The item itself is a "dud", and can be thrown at opponents to deal minor damage; walking around in-between of it being picked up.

Music Edit

Youtube play symbol
Mother The song "Mother" is a remixed medley of several songs from the original Mother title. The song includes remixes of "Bein' Friends" (the overworld theme played after Lloyd joins the party), the Eight Melodies around which the Mother game is based, the title screen theme "Mother Earth", and finally the generic enemy battle theme. It plays on the Onett stage.
Youtube play symbol
Mother 2 The song "Mother 2", contrary to its name, is a soft rock remix of "Pollyanna (I Believe in You)", a song that recurs throughout the EarthBound franchise. It is the alternate track for the Onett stage.
Youtube play symbol
EarthBound The song "EarthBound" is a remixed medley of several songs from EarthBound. The song includes remixes the Fourside background music "Because I Love You", as well as small portions of the Eight Melodies and the background music for the Fire Spring area. It plays primarily on the Fourside stage, but also during Event 26.
Youtube play symbol
Ness's Victory The Ness's Victory song plays whenever Ness is the winner of a versus match. The song is an orchestrated version of the final notes of the Eight Melodies.

Trophies Edit

Ness Trophy Melee
Ness Ness is a young boy who's mastered the psychic power known as PSI. Ness was living a normal life in the suburbs of Onett until a meteor crashed into a nearby mountain and sent him on a wild adventure. Believing in the ultimate powers of wisdom, courage, and friendship, Ness proves that some heroes come in small packages.
Ness Trophy (Smash) melee
Ness (Smash) The key to mastering Ness is controlling his unique midair jump, which makes up for what he lacks in speed. His PK Flash attack may seem weak at first glance, but it grows more powerful the longer you hold down the B Button. To do a lot of damage with PK Fire, try to burn your opponent as many times as possible.
Ness Trophy (Smash) 2 melee
Ness (Smash) Ness' mind is his best weapon. PK Thunder is a PSI missile weapon that can be guided using the Control Stick, and if Ness hits himself with it, he turns into a living missile capable of doing massive damage. This move can also be used for recovery. PSI Magnet turns energy missile attacks into health; try out certain Pokémon for stamina replenishment.
Mr. Saturn Trophy Melee
Mr. Saturn The origins of the Mr. Saturn race are unknown, but many believe they came from outer space. They reside in Saturn Valley and speak their own unique language. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mr. Saturn is just another item with which to pelt foes. These guys are laid back and not into fighting, so you can rest easy ...or can you?
UFO Trophy melee
UFO At the beginning of EarthBound, this flying saucer appears along with the ominous message, "The War Against Giygas!" Adding to the mystery are three more UFOs while fly amok in the skies over Onett; how all of these alien craft are connected is anyone's guess. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, this slippery UFO appears on the Fourside leve
Paula Trophy Melee
Paula Paula is a PSI master who used her incredible psychic abilities to call Ness from afar. Ness rescued Paula from the blue-stained clutches of the Happy Happyist cult, and she became integral to his EarthBound adventure. Originally, Ness didn't know either PK Thunder or PK Fire, so Paula probably taught him these techniques.
Jeff Trophy Melee
Jeff Another of Ness's close friends in EarthBound, Jeff is the only son of the famous scientist, Dr. Andonuts. Jeff is a mechanical genius, able to turn common, broken tools into complex weapons like the Hungry HP-sucker and the Slime Generator. He's a bit on the shy side but incredibly intelligent and brave in the heat of battle.
Poo Trophy Melee
Poo Poo, the crown prince of the mysterious eastern country of Dalaam, joined Ness after completing rigorous training in his home country. While he doesn't stand out among Ness's friends, his vast experience and strong willpower make him a key to their success. Poo can assume the form of an enemy to gain its powers.
Starman Trophy (Mother) melee
Starman Just one kooky subset of the diverse cast of enemies in EarthBound, these strange creatures are aliens in the employ of Giygas. Variations of the Starman race include Starman, Starman Jr., Starman Deluxe, and Starman Super. They all use PSI powers, but their strength differs depending on the level on which they're found.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Edit

Playable Characters Edit

Ness SSBB
Ness SSBB head
Ness Ness, being one of the original twelve fighters from the original Super Smash Bros. and thus a series staple at this point, returns once more for Brawl. His moveset is unchanged from Melee, though he has received several buffs to compensate for his weaknesses in Melee. Like all other veterans, Ness received a Final Smash in PK Starstorm.
Lucas SSBB
Lucas SSBB head
Lucas Lucas is the main protagonist of Mother 3, and a newcomer to the Super Smash Bros. series. Lucas is a young child from Tazmily Village on the Nowhere Islands. Lucas' special moves are all derived from Ness', being variants of his PK Flash, PK Fire, PSI Magnet, PK Thunder, and PK Starstorm attacks. Lucas has a largely different standard moveset, making them somewhat unique from each other.

Enemy Edit

Ultimate Chimera and Lucas SSBB
Ultimate Chimera The Ultimate Chimera is a stage hazard on the new "New Pork City" stage. The Ultimate Chimera is introduced in Mother 3, where it runs amok in the Chimera Laboratory, and will kill Lucas and his party with a single touch. This is referenced in Brawl, where any fighter that gets close enough to the Chimera is bitten and near-almost always gets OHKO'd.

Boss Edit

Porky SSBB
Porky Minch Porky Minch appears as a boss within the Subspace Emissary story mode in Brawl. Before he is fought, he enlists a large mechanized statue of himself to chase Lucas. Porky himself is fought inside the bed-mecha he uses in Mother 3, and can deploy robotic explosives that take on his appearance (Porky-bots).

Assist Trophy Edit

Jeff Andonuts SSBB
Jeff Andonuts After making a cameo as a trophy in Melee, Jeff Andonuts makes an appearance in Brawl as an assist trophy summon. He fires bottle rockets of his own creation after being spawned, and these rockets hone in on enemy fighters.

Stages Edit

New Pork Brawl
New Pork City New Pork City is a city ruled over by Porky Minch from Mother 3. The stage itself consists of many floating platforms unconnected to the city, though a floating limousine will occasionally travel from the city to the stage. The Ultimate Chimera, a deadly creature from Mother 3, may also spawn on the stage and chomp at opponents that draw near it.
SSBB Onett
Melee Stages:
Onett
Onett returns from Melee. The stage itself is near-identical to its appearance in Melee, though now certain ledges can not be grabbed, and the cars deal less knockback.

Items Edit

Mrsaturn SSBB
Mr. Saturn Mr. Saturn is a recurring species in the EarthBound series. Unlike in Melee, where it was a dud item, Mr. Saturn will now instantly break any shield it hits.
Franklin Badge SSBB
Franklin Badge The Franklin Badge is a recurring item in the EarthBound series. In its home series, it reflects most electric-based attacks; but in Super Smash Bros. Brawl it instead reflects all projectiles for a limited time.

Trophies Edit

Lucas - Brawl Trophy
Lucas The younger of twin brothers living in Tazmily Village in the Nowhere Islands. He's a kind boy who can communicate with animals, but he's shy and never really got over the tragedy that struck his mother. He fights a warped dictatorship, hunts the Seven Needles, and crosses swords with his missing brother, Claus. In the end, the young boy with psychic PSI powers grows up.
PK Starstorm (Lucas) - Brawl Trophy
PK Starstorm (Lucas) Lucas's Final Smash. He pulls a large group of stars from the sky and sends them smashing down among his enemies, causing damage to one and all. In Mother 3, this move was used by Lucas's traveling companion, Princess Kumatora. As Ness learned this move from Poo, Princess Kumatora taught Lucas when he learned he would appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Ness - Brawl Trophy
Ness An average boy whose life changed when he found a meteor and an alien on a nearby mountain. The alien warned him of a future threat, and adventure ensued. He can use psychic energy known as PSI and also wields a bat and yo-yo. This brave youth gives his all to defeat the evil Giygas.
PK Starstorm (Ness) - Brawl Trophy
PK Starstorm (Ness) Ness as he calls down a host of damage-dealing stars in his Final Smash. Everyone on the screen must dodge like crazy to avoid getting hurt, but that's no easy task. This attack appeared in the Mother series, but it was Poo, not Ness, who wielded it. Perhaps Poo taught Ness the secret of the attack for use in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Mr. Saturn - Brawl Trophy
Mr. Saturn A creature from a race of unknown origin that speaks its own unique language. Some say they came from outer space, but the facts behind their appearance are wrapped in mystery. In Smash Bros., they'll wait a bit after appearing before wandering off on their own. They can be picked up and thrown at foes for minimal damage. Their shield-breaking properties are high.
Franklin Badge - Brawl Trophy
Franklin Badge A badge you can put on to gain the ability to reflect all projectiles. It has exactly the same effect as other reflectors in the game, like the one Fox uses. In EarthBound, it was used to counter Thunder attacks. The lightning bolt on the badge is proof of its capacity. Its importance and usefulness made a deep impression on players.
Jeff - Brawl Trophy
Jeff Dr. Andonuts's son, who attends a boarding school in Winters. He receives a telepathic message from Paula saying that she and Ness have been captured, and he sets out to rescue them. He's Ness's age but has the knowledge of an established scientist. He repairs broken items and makes them into other things. As his IQ increases, so does the number of things he can create.
Porky - Brawl Trophy
Porky A self-centered, rotten brat who lives next door to Ness. As the events of the game progress, he's rapidly led astray and becomes Giygas's right-hand man. Afterward, he goes missing in time and then reappears in the Nowhere Islands of Mother 3. He leads the Pig Mask Army invasion but is eventually defeated by Lucas and friends.
Porky Statue - Brawl Trophy
Porky Statue A guardian statue standing inside New Pork City that's clearly based on Porky himself. Investigate it, and the statue will turn hostile and start a battle. And it has 100,000,000 HP! It has very high stats, so you'll never win if you attack it straight-on. Thankfully, there's an item called "New Year's Eve" that can reduce its HP to 1-- then you can defeat it with ease.

One of the main party members in EarthBound, he attends Snow Wood Boarding School in Winters. Jeff takes after his inventor father, Dr. Andonuts, creating devices in his free time. One of these is the bottle rocket, which fires one large missile and four smaller ones. And sometimes one extra!

This boy from EarthBound is the same age as Ness and goes to Snow Wood Boarding School. His dad, the genius scientist Dr. Andonuts, was the brain behind Jeff's weapon: the big bottle rocket. It's made up of four small missiles and one large one. And...who knows? Maybe you'll even get some extra firepower out of it!

The Flying Men are a team of five birdmen. Each time a Flying Man appears, he'll help the first person to reach him with Flying Cross Chops and Somersault Kicks. A small memorial stone will be erected for each one defeated. Once all five are gone, they're done fighting forever until the next battle.

FlagofEurope

The Flying Men are five brothers who seem to be some kind of bird people. They make great allies, smoothly combining majestic jumps with Flying Cross Chops and Somersault Kicks, and they'll each support whoever reaches them first. Sadly, once they're defeated, they'll be buried next to their homes, never to return.

The Flying Men from EarthBound are five kind brothers with a cruel fate. They live together in a house on the outskirts of Magicant. The brothers gladly join Ness on his journey, but if they fall in battle, they return home to be buried. In Smash Tour, they'll ally themselves with the first player to touch them.

Before adventuring, Lucas was a timid, cautious boy. His journey has made him a stronger person. Maybe he met someone to spend his life with... Hang on—we're moving way too fast! For now, remember that Lucas and Ness are favorites in the hearts of EarthBound fans.

Once upon a time, Lucas was a bit of a cry-baby. You might even say he was a wimp. But then, well...he had more than his fair share of rough times and toughened up a bit. Who knows what he's up to now? Whatever he's doing, his story - much like Ness's - lives on in the hearts of all Mother series fans.

Devil Car
FlagofUSA

A fearsome enemy from the Mother series, this car attacks mercilessly, closing in on fighters before trying to hit them as it spins doughnuts. No, these aren't the kind you eat—they're the kind that hurt. Its exhaust fumes can cause paralysis too, so keep your distance until it's between attacks.

FlagofEurope

In this game, this fearsome car from the Mother series does doughnuts. That's not "does doughnuts" in the sense of "bakes delicious sugary circles of dough", but rather "spins mercilessly into fighters to clobber them". Its exhaust fumes cause paralysis too, so keep your distance until it stops, then move in and attack it!

Magicant
FlagofUSA

A magical world in Mother and EarthBound, brought to life by the memories of certain characters. In this game, Magicant is a cloud stage where giant tomatoes, metal octopuses, and even the Sky Runner may appear. Even the hulking Dungeon Man may show up. What an unusual battlefield...

A world in Mother and EarthBound that brings your memories to life. In this game, it's a cloud stage where giant tomatoes, metal octopuses and the Sky Runner can appear at any moment. Dungeon Man might even show his face too, which, all in all, makes for a very unusual battle environment.

A flying machine designed by Dr. Andonuts, it is given to Jeff to travel to Threed. It promptly crash-lands, rendering it temporarily out of service. On the Magicant stage, it can sometimes be seen floating above the clouds before it suddenly zooms back into the sky.

FlagofEurope

A flying vehicle that Jeff receives from Dr. Andonuts. Unfortunately, he crashes it on his first flight, turning it into an unflyable wreck. The Sky Runner that appears in the Magicant stage descends from the sky without warning, then hovers in place, never landing on the clouds, before suddenly floating up and away.

Thanks to Dr. Andonuts's genius, the dungeon creator Brickroad was able to become the first man-dungeon hybrid in history, complete with an ATM, pay phone, and hospital. He walks back and forth slowly in the Magicant stage, and his head can serve as a platform to ride on as you fight.

FlagofEurope

Dedicated dungeon-designer Brick Road used Dr. Andonuts's knowledge to turn himself into this fully explorable human/dungeon combo, complete with ATMs, phones and more. In this game, he'll slowly make his way across the Magicant stage every now and then. Feel free to use his head as a platform.

PK Starstorm (Ness) In EarthBound, this PSI ability belonged to Poo, the Crown Prince of Dalaam and one of Ness's friends. Ness must have learned it especially for Smash Bros.! The attack makes a shower of meteors fall onto the stage, damaging any foes it hits. While the attack's in progress, Ness is invincible and can adjust the meteors' trajectory.

You can adjust the direction of the shooting stars in this attack! Rain stars down on multiple fighters at once, or be mean and pick on a single fighter. The choice is yours! If a star connects, it will deal ongoing fire damage, making it hard for opponents to return to the stage.

FlagofEurope

Lucas uses his PSI powers to summon a stream of shooting stars, the angle of which you can control. It's good for attacking an entire group during a free-for-all...or if you want to make things tougher for a single person. Even if the attack only hits once, it deals ongoing fire damage, making it harder to get back to the stage.

Porky was just a chubby, selfish little boy in EarthBound. When he next appeared, in Mother 3, look what he'd become! We might need another two games just to explain how this occurred. Oh, Porky, what in Eagleland (or beyond?) happened to change you so?
