Series AnimalCrossingSymbol Animal Crossing
Debut title Animal Crossing: New Leaf
System of origin Nintendo 3DS
Year of debut 2012

Isabelle (Japanese: しずえ Shizue) is the assistant to the mayor character, and one of the most well-known characters, from the Animal Crossing franchise. Isabelle initially appeared as an Assist Trophy character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and was planned to return to this role in Super Smash Bros. Strife. Like Birdo and Alph, who were planned to be an Assist Trophy and alternate costume, respectively, Isabelle was included as a semi-clone character in Strife due to excess remaining development time. In Isabelle's case, she is a semi-clone of the Villager.

Isabelle has her twin brother Digby (Japanese: ケント Kento) as an alternate character.

Changes from Villager[]

Notice Isabelle has several aesthetics changes in her attacks. For instance, all of the tools that Isabelle uses (axe, net, shovel, etc.) are based on their Golden variants, as opposed to the normal variants used by Villager.
Notice Isabelle borrows several standard attacks from other characters. Several include her down and back aerials being borrowed from Toon Link and utilizing the Shovel as a sword, an action similar to Peach's up special as her up aerial, and several of Lucas' throws.
Notice Isabelle is slightly lighter than Villager.
Notice Isabelle falls at a slightly slower speed.
Notice Isabelle does not share two of her special moves with Villager: Fruit Basket, and Kart Launch. Both of these attacks are instead cloned from other characters, specifically the Mii Brawler and Bowser Jr..
Buff Overall, Isabelle generally deals more damage than Villager does.
Buff Isabelle jumps slightly higher.
Nerf Isabelle dashes at a slower speed.

Description[]

Isabelle is the hard-working assistant to the mayor in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and has become the series mascot following the game's popularity. Isabelle has a twin brother named Digby, who works at the Happy Home Showcase in New Leaf and Nook's Homes in Happy Home Designer.

Isabelle is the assistant to one of the player characters in New Leaf; specifically the one that becomes the mayor. In the game, she does most of the paperwork that a mayor would usually be assigned to do, leaving the player to attend to their own schedule. Of course, the player is capable of speaking to her at any time for a variety of reasons.

Moveset[]

Special Move Description
Neutral Special Move Fruit Basket Isabelle throws a fruit in an upwards direction, similar to the Mii Brawler's Shot Put attack. It can meteor smash opponents if they are hit at certain angles.
Custom Variants Fruit Cannon Isabelle throws a fruit directly forwards at a fast speed. It can travel through opponents and deals less damage, but has much better range.
Explosive Fruit The fruit is thrown normally, but Isabelle does so at a slower rate. The fruit explodes on contact with an opponent, dealing much more damage and knockback.
Perfect Fruit The fruit is larger and is thrown faster, but does not deal as much damage and it is harder to meteor smash opponents with.
Side Special Move Kart Launch Isabelle summons the Standard Kart from Mario Kart 8 and dashes forwards as the button is held. When the button is let go, she spins out, dealing knockback. This is based off Bowser Jr.'s side special move, and acts extremely similar, though with some differences. For instance, Isabelle's kart has the power to break shields, and travels faster at the cost of it being harder to control.
Custom Variants Power Drift The kart takes slightly longer to appear, and travels much slower, but running into an opponent hits them multiple times. The attack also removes the power to break shields.
Grounding Drift The kart travels at a slower speed and does not deal any damage, but hitting an opponent buries them.
Gliding Kart When used on the ground, the kart deals much less damage and can no longer break shields, but when used in the air the Kart attaches a glider. Hitting airborne opponents deals the same amount of damage as Isabelle would normally, and can serve as horizontal recovery. The attack, however, is even harder to control, as letting go of the attack button only puts away the glider, and Isabelle will continue driving for a bit on the ground before stopping, and does not deal any knockback.
Up Special Move Balloon Trip Identical to Villager's up special move of the same name, Isabelle dons a helmet and balloons that allow her to float upwards. Unlike Villager, Isabelle only has two balloons, and travels slightly slower.
Custom Variants Balloon High Jump Isabelle uses balloons to high jump upwards. While she travels a long distance upwards, she has very little horizontal recovery. The jump can also cause slight damage.
Extreme Balloon Trip Does not travel as high as the normal Balloon Trip, but the balloons explode to deal damage and knockback after a set distance.
Super Balloon Trip Instead of small balloons, Isabelle dons a single large balloon that takes more damage to destroy. She travels slightly faster, but at the cost of having less aerial control.
Down Special Move Timber Timber is identical to Villager's down special move of the same name. Isabelle must plant a sapling in the ground, water it once, then chop the grown tree twice to actually deal damage. While swings from the axe deal more damage than Villager's, it does not deal as much knockback. The tree grown is a fruit tree, and when chopped down will drop anywhere between one and three fruits, which heal 3% each. The watering can used in the second phase of the attack can push away opponents.
Custom Variants Perfect Fruit Tree The sapling must now be watered twice, but the fruit dropped from the chopped tree will heal 10% each, due to being "Perfect".
Timber Counter The sapling causes opponents to slip should they walk atop it, and the tree itself deals damage when attacked (unless the attack destroys the tree). Chopping down the tree deals less damage and knockback, and the fruit dropped only deals 1% instead. The watering can is harder to push opponents away with, due to the water not travelling as far.
Super Timber Each phase of the attack is slower, but the tree that grows is much bigger and deals more damage and knockback when chopped down. It can drop anywhere between one and five fruits when chopped down, all of which heal 5%.
Final Smash Expansion! Isabelle summons Timmy, Tommy, and Tom Nook to expand the Town Hall. While the attack is easier to connect with due to the size of the Town Hall being significantly larger, it does not deal any knockback at the end of the attack, instead just dealing damage.

Taunts[]

Direction Description
Up taunt Claps her paws together and jumps up as flowers bloom around her. Includes elements from the "joy" emotion from Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Side taunt Blushes heavily as she rubs the back of her head, looking towards the ground. Similar to the "bashfulness" emotion from Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Down taunt Laughs as yellow lines surround her head. Similar to the "laughing" emotion from Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

On-Screen Appearance[]

The Town Hall appears in the background and Isabelle steps out of it before it disappears.

Victory Fanfare[]

The victory fanfare used by characters of the Animal Crossing series in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U is reused for Super Smash Bros. Strife. The fanfare is a remix of an excerpt of the main theme from the original Animal Crossing title.

This fanfare is shared with Villager.

Victory Poses[]

  • Isabelle looks around before marking something off on the clipboard she is holding.
  • Isabelle jumps up and down happily as she claps.
  • Isabelle trips over, and looks around embarrassed.
