"Generation III" was the third Generation of the Pokémon series. Generation III introduced 135 Pokémon, labelled 252 through 386 in the National Poké Dex.

Generation III primarily consists of three core games and two remakes: Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, as well as Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Versions. Two games released as part of Generation III - Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness - were the first role-playing Pokémon games released for a home console system.

Generation III continued to advance on the gameplay introduced in Generation I. Some of the new mechanics introduced are abilities for Pokémon, overworld weather changes, Double Battles, link trades/link battles, and the introduction of Pokémon Contests.

Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Versions are all set in the new Hoenn region. Unlike in the Generation II titles, players are no longer able to travel back to previously shown regions, as Hoenn is made up of many different islands. Two new playable characters are introduced alongside new region, while a third is introduced in the remakes of the Generation I games released afterwards.
