Helioptile are small, lizard-like Pokémon. They have a tapering tail, short legs, and small feet with three pointed toes on each foot. Their body is pale yellow, while their feet and the tip of their tail are black. The top of their head is black as well with a small triangular yellow patch between the eyes. They have two long, pointed frills hanging from the sides of their head that are black with yellow tips. The frills can stiffen and unfold. They have large eyes with blue irises and white pupils.

  • Helioptile was the first Pokémon revealed to have Normal-type as a secondary typing.
    • Generation VI introduced four Pokémon with Normal as their secondary typing, though the other three had their types confirmed after Helioptile.
    • Helioptile is not the first Pokémon to have Normal as their secondary type by National Poké Dex number. Litleo (#667) precedes it, but even before that Pokémon is Rattata's Alola Form (#019).
  • Helioptile is the first Pokémon to evolve using a Sun Stone that is not part  Grass -type.
