Console of origin NES

The Ice Climber universe refers to content from the game Ice Climber in reference to its representation within the Super Smash Bros. series of fighting games. The Ice Climber universe was introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and reappeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Though the "series" technically consists of a single title (which has over time been re-released and slightly altered), it has a rather large amount of representation for the little that appears in the game. In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Ice Climber and Balloon Fight universes are closely linked, as elements of the later universe make appearances alongside elements of the former.

Playable Characters Edit

Ice Climbers SSBM

Ice Climbers SSBM head
Ice Climbers Popo and Nana, collectively the Ice Climbers, appear as a single playable unit in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The two children are adventures who live on the Infinite Glacier, where they climb mountains inhabited by strange creatures and coated in sheets of ice. They feature updated designs, and now have aesthetic details previously only seen in artworks. Popo and Nana use various ice-based attacks to attack opponents, with many of their attacks making little reference to their game of origin (though links are present). The head Ice Climber (usually Popo, though some palette swaps have Nana take the role) must be KO'd for it to actually count, as the following one is a computer-controlled character that follows the player's lead.

Enemies Edit

Topi The Topi are yeti-like creatures (seals in the Japanese version) that live on the icy expanse known as Infinite Glacier. They act similar to the Goombas of the Super Mario universe, in that they wander back and forth and are generally seen as the weakest of the franchise's opponents. Topi have a small chance of appearing from Crates, though spawn naturally on the Icicle Mountain stage.
Polar Bear The large Polar Bear is generally seen as one of the Ice Climber mascots, alongside the titular Ice Climbers themselves. They are large and wear sunglasses and shorts, as if going to the beach to tan. They wander back and forth, similarly to the Topi, though take many more hits to defeat. The Polar Bears have a small chance of appearing from Crates, though spawn naturally on the Icicle Mountain stage.

Stages Edit

SSBM Icicle Mountain
Icicle Mountain Icicle Mountain is essentially a modern reimagining of the original mountain(s) featured within Ice Climber. The screen scrolls upwards at a slowly increasing pace, and players that are left below are KO'd as they leave the screen. Topi and Polar Bears litter the various platforms that make up the stage, further referencing the game of origin. After reaching a certain height, the stage will begin to scroll back downwards, after which the cycle repeats. In addition to the natural spawning of Polar Bears and Topi, the Freezie item also spawns on some slopes, referencing the falling icicles from Ice Climber.

Music Edit

Icicle Mountain The song Icicle Mountain plays as the primary background music on the stage of the same name. It is a rearrangement of both the bonus stage and normal stage level themes from Ice Climber.

Ice Climbers' Victory The Ice Climbers' Victory song plays whenever the Ice Climbers are victorious at the end of a match. The song is an orchestrated variation of the Ice Climber level clear fanfare.

Trophies Edit

Ice Climber Trophy Melee
Ice Climbers That's Popo in the blue and Nana in the pink. These two stars of the game Ice Climber have scaled many an icy summit in their mountaineering careers. Back in their glory days, they chased eggplants, cucumbers, and other vegetables that inexplicably fell from frosty summits when a condor reigned supreme. They're rarely seen apart.
Ice Climber Trophy (Smash) melee
Ice Climbers (Smash) This unique twosome fights together as a team. Your score will not be affected if the CPU-controlled character is KO'd, but a lone Ice Climber won't be able to use teamwork moves, which will make for a tough and frantic solo fight. The Ice Shot fires mini-glaciers out of their hammers, while Squall Hammer is at its strongest when Nana and Popo combine their strength.
Ice Climber Trophy (Smash 2) melee
Ice Climbers (Smash) The colors of the Ice Climbers' parkas denotes who's in the lead: Nana's in pink or orange, while Popo's in green or blue. Their hairstyles are also slightly different. Belay allows them to cover great distances, but doesn't give foes the chance to target their landing. Blizzard is best used in close quarters; in the fray, Nana and Popo will sometimes freeze opponents.
Polar Bear Trophy Melee
Polar Bear This bizarre beast appears whenever the Ice Climbers take five during their ascents. Each leap the upright bear makes causes an earthquake and makes the mountain scroll upward. If the climbers fall off the bottom of the screen, they'll drop into a bottomless chasm. For reasons unknown, it sports pink shorts and sunglasses.
Topi Trophy Melee
Topi Topis debuted in the game Ice Climber, shuttling ice with which to repair in the floor. They were kept really busy, as Nana and Popo constantly cracked floors with single strikes of their ice hammers. Despite the monotony of their chilly work, these creatures never slacked off for an instant.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Edit

Playable Characters Edit

Ice Climbers SSBB head
Ice Climbers The Ice Climbers return, mostly unchanged, from Melee. Like all fighters, the Ice Climbers now have a Final Smash attack. "Iceberg", their Final Smash, has the two Ice Climbers summon a large glacier that cuts through the centre of the stage to damage and freeze opponents near it.

Stages Edit

SSBB Summit
Summit Summit is a new stage somewhat based upon the Ice Climber franchise. The stage takes place on a piece of a glacier supposedly located at the base of Melee's Icicle Mountain. The stage then slides down the mountain, and the gravity is altered appropriately, before landing in water and partially submerging, with those swimming in the deep water capable of being eaten by Balloon Fight's fish.

Vegetable Ice Climber SSBB
Vegetables Vegetables can sometimes spawn on the new Summit stage. They act near identically to the "Food" item, in that they heal a small amount of damage when consumed. The Vegetables feature a new sound effect based on the one from Ice Climber where Popo or Nana eat a vegetable.

Youtube play symbol
Ice Climber The song "Ice Climber" is the default song used for the Summit stage. It is a rearrangement and mash-up of several songs from the game Ice Climber, including a piano variant of the game's title screen with a vocal part from the Ice Climbers themselves ("Hey guys; this is the Ice Climbers! Well, all you have to do is get rid of your friends and climb the iceberg!"). This is followed by an electric guitar variant of the same theme, and afterwards a calm remix of the game's main theme. The song is pseudo-synchronized to the events of the Summit stage.

Ice Climbers - Brawl Trophy
Ice Climbers The one in blue is Popo, and the one in pink is Nana. They use their incredible jumping powers and hammers to break blocks and climb to the summit. They grab veggies, and if they can catch the condor at the end, they conquer the mountain. Other than breaking blocks, their hammers are good for sending foes flying, climbing down from blocks, and destroying icicles.
Iceberg - Brawl Trophy
Iceberg The Ice Climbers' Final Smash. This giant ice mountain appears in the middle of a stage—it's incredibly slippery, so it's hard to control yourself when traversing it. In addition to being slick, this ice is also COLD, so opponents will take damage just from touching it. Attack the ice, and it will take damage and slowly shrink. Is it actually useful? That's a mystery.
Vegetables - Brawl Trophy
Vegetables The Ice Climbers' goal is to climb peaks. Just below each peak is a bonus stage where these bonus items appear in this order: eggplant, carrot, cabbage, cucumber, corn, turnip, pumpkin, Chinese cabbage, potato, and mushroom. You'll also get points for grabbing the condor at the peak after collecting the veggies. Why vegetables? That's a mystery for the ages.

Enemy Edit

Polar Bear removed POTD
Polar Bear Unlike the Ice Climbers, the Polar Bear reappears as an enemy in the Nintendo 3DS-exclusive Smash Run mode. It attacks by slamming the ground when fighters draw near, dealing significant damage.

Ice Climbers

This pair of adventurers starred in an action game released in 1985. Popo wears blue, and Nana wears red. The goal of their adventure was to reach the top of the mountain, collecting vegetables and defeating animals along the way. Grabbing the condor earned them a nice bonus too!

SSBWiiU Icon

Popo (in blue) and Nana (in pink) are the daring adventurers from the two-player platformer Ice Climber, released in Europe in 1986. In that game, your goal is to head up a mountain, breaking blocks and taking out pesky critters along the way. When you get to the top, you can collect veg and grab on to the condor to get bonus points! Nice!

SSB3D Icon
Polar Bear This free-spirited polar bear usually just wanders around aimlessly, but sometimes he likes to shake things up a bit. Literally! He'll jump in the air and then land hard, causing a huge earthquake that makes the whole screen shake and does damage to anyone on the ground. He's not keen on heat, though, so hit him with fire attacks!
