Debut title Ice Climber
System of origin Nintendo Entertainment System
Year of debut 1985

The Ice Climbers (Japanese: アイス クライマー Aisu Kuraimā), separately Popo and Nana, are the aptly-named protagonists of the NES title Ice Climber. The Ice Climbers work together, and fight alongside each other on the battlefield. The Ice Climbers first debut in the second instalment of the Super Smash Bros. series, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and later appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Both Popo and Nana are voiced by Sanae Kobayashi.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Buff The lead Ice Climber's running speed is increased when the other Ice Climber is defeated.

Description

Popo (in blue) and Nana (in pink) are the two playable characters from Ice Climber. Popo was controlled by player one, while Nana by player two. The game relied on co-operation between the two Ice Climbers, as the goal of a level was to reach the summit of the mountain, avoiding the various creatures that aim to hinder their progress.

Outside of the Super Smash Bros. series, the Ice Climbers only appeared in Ice Climber, its re-releases and the multiplayer-based Vs. Ice Climber.

Moveset

Special Move Description
Neutral Special Move Ice Shot Both of the Ice Climbers fire small stalagmite of ice that travels a short distance across the ground.
Custom Variants Iceberg Shot The shot is larger and travels slower, but can travel through multiple opponents. It deals slightly less damage.
Thin Ice Shot The shot is smaller and travels much faster, but it deals very little damage but some knockback.
Shard Shot The shot does not travel as far, and explodes on contact.
Side Special Move Squall Hammer The Ice Climbers spin around each other with their hammers outstretched, travelling a short distance forwards.
Custom Variants Gust Hammer The hammers do not deal any damage, but instead push away those near the Ice Climbers. The Ice Climbers travel forwards slightly more.
Storm Hammer The hammers deal less damage, but it freezes opponents and the hammers are swung slightly faster. The Ice Climbers travel forwards slightly less.
Blast Hammer The hammers are swung extremely slowly, and the Ice Climbers do not move forwards when used. The hammers deal massive damage and knockback, however.
Up Special Move Belay The lead Ice Climber throws the other Ice Climber upwards, who then pulls the other Ice Climber forwards.
Custom Variants Footstool Belay The leading Ice Climber jumps off the follower's head, propelling them further upwards but more than likely KOing their partner.
Bungee Chord Instead of belaying each other, the Ice Climbers use a bungee chord to tether to a ledge should they be close enough. This works even should there be only one Ice Climber in battle.
Condor Belay The Ice Climbers belay a shorter distance, but they deal slight damage on contact and belay quicker.
Down Special Move Blizzard Both Ice Climbers fire a stream of icy wind from their palms, and they face opposite directions as they do so. The icy wind freezes opponents.
Custom Variants Gale Wind The Ice Climbers fire gusts of wind from their palms, pushing away nearby fighters but dealing no damage.
Heat Wave The Ice Climbers create fire as opposed to ice. While the attack does slightly more damage, it has shorter distance.
Ice Punch The Ice Climbers punch with an icy energy. The attack does more damage than Blizzard and knockback, but has very short range.
Final Smash Iceberg The Ice Climbers summon a large iceberg that cuts through the middle of the stage. Touching the iceberg or the being in the close vicinity damages and freezes opponents over time.

Taunts

All three of the Ice Climbers' taunts are reused from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Direction Description
Up taunt Place their hammers on the ground and jump up and down multiple times.
Side taunt Both shout as they pose with their hammers out in front of them.
Down taunt Both jump around in a circle happily.

On-Screen Appearance

A condor carries them onto the stage, which then proceeds to fly off.

Victory Fanfare

The Ice Climbers' victory theme from Super Smash Bros. Brawl is reused in Super Smash Bros. Strife. The fanfare is a remix of the fanfare that plays at the end of a Bonus Stage in Ice Climber.

Victory Poses

All three of the Ice Climbers' victory poses are reused from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

  • Both nod and high five each other.
  • Both jump up and down.
  • Nana hides behind Popo and happily peaks out from behind him.
