Johto (Japanese: ジョウト地方 Jōto-chihō) is a region of the Pokémon world.
Johto was the second region introduced in the Pokémon series, and is the primary setting of the Generation II titles Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal Versions, as well as Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, their Generation IV remakes.
Many of the cities and towns of Johto are named after plants or have plant-related names (New Bark Town, Cherrygrove City, Mahogany Town, etc.). The regional professor, Professor Elm, is situated in New Bark Town, giving one of Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile to new trainers.
Johto is inspired by the Kansai region (関西地方) of Japan. According to Junichi Masuda, the director of most Pokémon titles, the kanji that inspired the name "Johto" mean 城都 (castle palace) or 条都 (lattice-shaped palace). Despite their close proximity, the Kanto and Johto regions are very different, much like the Kansai and Kantō regions that act as their counterparts in the real world.
