Kanto (Japanese: カントー地方 Kantō-chihō) is a region of the Pokémon world.
Kanto was the first region introduced in the Pokémon series, being introduced as the setting of the Generation I titles Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow Versions, and their Generation III remakes Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Versions.
With the exception of the hometown of player characters Red and Leaf and rival Blue (Pallet Town), all cities and towns are named after colours (Viridian City, Cerulean City, Fuchsia City, etc.). The regional professor, Professor Oak, is situated in Palette Town and gives aspiring new trainers a choice between Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander.
Kanto is named after the Kantō region (関東 east of the barrier) of Japan, making it the only region named directly after a real-life location.
In Generations I and II, the official artowork of Kanto depicted it as a grassland with few trees. Later titles would depict it with more trees.
