Lloyd Irving (Japanese: ロイド・アーヴィング Roido Aavingu) is a newcomer fighter to the Super Smash Bros. series as downloadable content for Super Smash Bros. Strife. Lloyd is one of the 16 playable third party characters to appear in Strife, being from Namco Bandai's Tales series. Lloyd uses the Vorpal Sword and Flamberge - collectively known as the Material Blades - in Strife, using them to deal both fire and ice damage.
Kousuke Fujishima reprises his role as Lloyd Irving in the Japanese version of the game, while Brian Beacock does so for the English versions.
Lloyd Irving is the main protagonist of Tales of Symphonia and a secondary protagonist of its sequel, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. In the former title, he is a 17 year old who accompanies one of his closest friends, Colette Brunel, on her journey as the Chosen of Regeneration; fulfilling an ages-old prophecy that he should play no part in.
In Super Smash Bros. Strife, Lloyd wields the Material Blades known as the Vorpal Sword and Flamberge. The Vorpal Sword is an ice-elemental weapon, while the Flamberge is a fire-elemental one. Lloyd obtains both of these swords in Tales of Symphonia, using them throughout the game's story. Though he does not use these same swords in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, the swords he does use are coloured red and blue to invoke the imagery of them.
Lloyd is one of the most well-known Tales protagonists, with only Yuri Lowell of Tales of Vesperia rivalling his popularity. He has made a number of appearances outside his native series, with him previously being a playable character in SoulCalibur Legends, and having a downloadable Mii Costume in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
|Neutral Special Move||Demon Fang||Lloyd slashes his sword, and a beam of light is shot from it. The beam travels along the ground for a short while before disappearing; though it may also disappear should it hit a fighter. If used in the air, it will travel at a downwards angle, but will continue along any wall/platform it comes in contact with. The light can be reflected.|
|Custom Variants||Demon Fist||Instead of slashing his sword, Lloyd instead uppercuts, which sends the beam from in front of him in an upwards direction.|
|Double Demon Fang||Lloyd slashes his sword twice, creating two beams of light. They deal slightly less damage but travel further.|
|Fierce Demon Fang||Turns the move into a counter, as Lloyd strikes a defensive stance and, when hit by an attack, will counter it by slamming his swords downwards to create a shockwave around him.|
|Side Special Move||Sonic Thrust||Lloyd stabs with both his swords as he travels a short distance forwards in a burst of energy.|
|Custom Variants||Demon Thrust||Lloyd instead slashes as if performing Demon Fang, before stabbing and moving a shorter distance forwards. Deals more damage.|
|Power Thrust||Lloyd does not travel forwards at all, but the tip of his swords deal massive damage at the cost of the attack taking much longer to start.|
|Ethereal Thrust||Lloyd travels a much further distance forwards, and can travel through opponents, but only deals 1% damage on contact. Despite it dealing damage, the attack can not be countered.|
|Up Special Move||Tiger Blade||Lloyd jumps upwards with one of his swords held out beside him to deal damage multiple times as he travels upwards, before knocking away fighters with a slash.|
|Custom Variants||Heavy Tiger Blade||At the peak of his jump, Lloyd will then slam downwards, meteor smashing airborne opponents while burying those on the ground. Does not have as much vertical recovery.|
|Tiger Rage||Lloyd instead spins in the air, dealing damage multiple times but dealing little knockback, before slamming downwards.|
|Light Tiger Blade||Almost doubles the amount of height Lloyd jumps, but does not deal damage.|
|Down Special Move||Beast||Lloyd slashes his swords, creating a lion's head out of pure energy that roars. The roar deals massive knockback to all those close enough to it, but deals absolutely zero damage.|
|Custom Variants||Punishing Beast||The attack takes longer to use, as Lloyd spins around before slashing, but the roar deals damage and less knockback.|
|Hungry Hunter||The attack deals no knockback, but instead paralyzes and slightly damages those that come in contact with the lion's head.|
|Apocalyptica||Lloyd instead slams downwards, encasing himself within a lion's head for a short while that damages all those that come in contact with it.|
|Final Smash||Falcon's Crest||Lloyd will fuse his two swords together to create the Eternal Sword, and, if there is a fighter close enough to him, he will slash at them once to deal massive damage.|
|Up taunt||Holds the sword in his left hand downwards at an angle, and perches the sword in his right hand over his shoulder. Wind blows his scarf to emulate his SoulCalibur Legends artwork.|
|Side taunt||Hold his two swords out in front of his chest in opposing parallel directions.|
|Down taunt||Pumps his fist in the air cheering "Yeah!".|
On-Screen Appearance Edit
Lloyd falls from the sky and lands in a crouching position, and catches his blades before standing up.
Victory Fanfare Edit
Lloyd's victory fanfare is a slightly remixed version of the battle victory theme from Tales of Symphonia.
Victory Poses Edit
- Slashes with his swords before turning to the side and saying "Did everyone see me?"
- Throws his swords upwards before catching them and saying "Ready for round two?"
- Sheathes his swords while facing away from the screen before turning around and giving a thumbs up.
