“ Because we are calling it a 'new concept', we are not thinking of this as a 'simple replacement' for the 3DS or the Wii U. ”
Nintendo Switch, originally codenamed the "NX", is a home console created by Nintendo and set to be officially revealed in 2016. Former president of Nintendo, the late Satoru Iwata, originally announced the development of the NX at an investors meeting in March of 2015. In April 2016, it was officially announced to be releasing March 2017.
The first title officially revealed for the system was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which will release simultaneously on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch; though other developers had suggested ports of existing games prior to Breath of the Wild's official announcement at E3 2016, with Just Dance 2017 and Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI among the titles rumoured to be ported to the system. Project Sonic 2017, which Sega revealed at their Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary Party in July 2016, was the first third-party game explicitly confirmed for release on the system.
Despite initially being revealed to be in development in March 2015, it wasn't until October 2016 when the console was officially revealed by Nintendo. In the initial reveal trailer for the system, various games were shown off: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, and NBA 2K17; and new entries in the Super Mario, Mario Kart, and Splatoon series. Shortly after the system's announcement, Nintendo revealed over fourty third party studios that would support the Nintendo Switch at launch, with such studios including Activision, Bethesda, Capcom, and more.
