PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, originally announced as PlayStation 4 Battle Royale, is the spiritual successor to the 2012 PlayStation 3 fighting game of the same name. The game is developed by Naughty Dog and SIE Santa Monica Studio, with the latter having also developed the original title. The game is a 2.5-D fighting game that draws elements from Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series of mascot fighting games; using a simplified attack scheme compared to traditional fighting games, and lacking the fighting game staple health bar.
The game features characters and stages from a number of properties both owned by Sony and from companies that have supported the PlayStation brand.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is seen as a reboot of the original title, and does not explicitly mention or reference it in any way.
The game is a 2.5-D fighting game, where up to four characters are thrown into a platformer-esque stage where they will duel until they are out of stocks.
Fighters can use a number of different attacks to deal out damage, each using a different button in conjunction with the left control stick: standard attacks performed with the button; stronger standard attacks performed with the button; and special moves performed with the button. Using either of the or buttons, players can block attacks to absorb some of an attack's damage.
Upon dishing out enough damage to fill up their Power Gauge, the button can be used to a Super Move to KO fighters. Unlike the original title, each fighter only has a single Super Move, and this is no longer the only way to KO a fighter.
When damage is taken, a fighter's Power Gauge decreases a slight bit. If the gauge is fully drained, they can be KO'd by successfully performing a special move on them. Should they successfully block such an attack, they will fill a quarter of their Power Gauge.
Playable Characters Edit
There are a total of 35 playable characters featured in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, increasing the roster from the original game by ten. In regards to the roster compared to the original game, only two characters do not return: Heihachi Mishima from Tekken and Raiden from Metal Gear.
There are five third party franchises represented by playable characters: Electronic Arts' Dead Space, 2K Games' BioShock, Capcom's Devil May Cry, and Activision's Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. Of these five series, three of them were represented in the original title.
Infamous, God of War, Uncharted, PaRappa the Rapper, and LittleBigPlanet all have the most playable representation with two fighters each. Of these, Infamous and God of War were the only ones to not receive a new fighter in this game.
There are nine new series represented by playable characters: The Legend of Dragoon, The Last of Us, Everybody's Golf / Hot Shots Golf, Horizon Zero Dawn, Soul Sacrifice, ModNation Racers, Puppeteer, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro.
Six more characters were released through paid downloadable content. Through downloadable content, the Uncharted series received its third representative - Young Drake. Other games to receive representation are The Last Guardian, Knack, Bloodborne, Tearaway, and Beyond: Two Souls; granting these other five series their first playable characters.
Returning Characters Edit
| Nathan Drake is the main protagonist of the Uncharted series, a series of action-adventure games in which Nate goes on a variety of adventures as he tries to amass great fortune through his love of treasure hunting.
Nathan's standard attacks are all close-quarters, featuring a variety of punches, kicks, and uppercuts; and his stronger standard attacks also utilizing hand-to-hand combat in conjunction with a variety of grenades. His special moves allow him the use of a variety of conventional weapons, utilizing an AK-44 assault rifle, M32-Hammer grenade launcher, Micro-9mm submachine gun, and the like.
His Super Move grants access to Eddy's Golden Gun. The gun, which Nate can shoot a total of three times, will instantly KO opponents should they be hit by its bullet.
| Sackboy is the name of the playable character of all the LittleBigPlanet games; a small boy made of brown fabric with a love of creating. He does not speak, instead the LittleBigPlanet narrator does for him.
Sackboy is a very technical fighter, using the LittleBigPlanet Popit Menu to summon a variety of different items to aid him in battle. His attacks are primarily based around using a variety of different gadgets, his standard attacks primarily using the Gripple Grapple, Grabinator, and the Bounce Pad. His special moves have him using a Jetpack, jam, and rockets; he can also use the LittleBigPlanet checkpoints to travel around a stage. His strong special moves are more projectile-based attacks, firing cakes or fans to move fighters.
His Level 2 Super Move from the original game, Coal Catastrophe, returns as his sole Super Move. Sackboy places a line of flaming coals, which remain on stage for a few moments and KO fighters on touch.
| The God of War and son of the lightning god Zeus, Kratos is the main protagonist of the God of War series. Born a demigod Spartan, he sought revenge on Ares and the other Olympians that betrayed him.
Kratos is one of the strongest and most beginner-friendly fighters in the game. Utilizing the Blades of Athena for a large majority of standard and strong attacks, he is a deadly close quarters fighter. His special moves have him use a variety of different weapons, including the Golden Fleece, Apollo's Bow, Wings of Icarus, and Helios' decapitated head.
Divine Fury, Kratos' level 1 Super Move from the original game, returns as his Super Move. Equipping the Blade of Olympus for a short time, he can execute powerful slash attacks that KO fighters instantly.
| Zeus rules over both the mortals and immortals of the God of War series as the King of the Gods. The father of series protagonist Kratos, Zeus counters him as the main antagonist.
As one should expect from Zeus, a large majority of his attacks revolve around his ability to control and handle lightning. A very small number of his attacks do not revolve around summoning lightning to deal damage.
Wrath of Zeus, though same in name, is different from his Super Move from the original title. This new Super Move features him summoning a storm of giant lightning bolts that rain from the sky to KO fighters around him.
| Emmett Graves is the main playable character of Starhawk. Formerly the owner of a Rift Energy salvaging operation, he and his brother were exposed to the strange Rift Energy that mutates Rifters into Outcasts. While his brother was transformed into an Outcast, Emmett's life was saved by his friend Sidney Cutter. Now, he works as a mercenary, getting paid to assist Rifters who need protection.
Emmett's moveset is a complicated one. He primarily fights with a Kinetic Rifle for his special moves, while a Rifter Knife for his standard ones. His stronger special moves have him call in Sidney Cutter to give him new weapons via airdrop, which act as items. Because of his three weapon choices - the Kinetic Rifle, the Union Shotgun, and the M.A.W. Launcher - he has three different, very unique, special movesets.
His Super Move is his Level 2 Super Move from the original game: Rift Bomb. Emmett calls in Sidney, who airdrops a Rift Bomb that explodes with a great radius as it hits the stage, KOing those who touch it.
New Characters Edit
| Samuel Drake is the elder brother of Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake. A professional thief, he was thought by his brother to have died thirteen years prior to Uncharted 4, where he fell off the roof of a Panamanian prison seemingly to his death.
Sam's moveset is vastly different from his brother's. Like Nathan's standard moveset, Sam uses a variety of physical attacks to deal out damage. He also carries around an Aegis 9mm pistol, which he can use to deal damage from a distance. To differentiate him from his brother, Sam's special moveset sees heavy use of his motorcycle. On his motorcycle, he can run over opponents, or shoot as he drives. He also uses an RPG-7 in some of his attacks to deal massive damage at the cost of the attack being slow and easy to miss.
Samuel's Super Move has him call in Victor Sullivan. The two stand back-to-back and fire temporarily-continuous streams of bullets from pistols of choice: Samuel's Aegis 9mm and Sully's Wes-44.
| Yuna is one of the default golfers introduced in the 2011 title Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational / Everybody's Golf. She is a 17 year-old golfer from Japan, who was earned a sizable fanbase with her playful nature.
Yuna's moveset is a close-ranged one. She uses a golfing club as if it were a spear, prodding her opponents from afar and getting in close to deal more damage. Her standard and strong standard movesets utilize a very physical and close-ranged style of play, and her smaller frame and faster movements allow her to quickly duck in and out to deal damage to foes quickly, while also dodge incoming attacks. In contrast, her special moveset has her primarily utilizing golf balls to deal damage from afar. She can also summon a golf cart to run over nearby fighters, and throw larger golf bags to smash fighters away.
Her Super Move draws influence from golf, and from the sometimes-fantastical tone of the Hot Shots Golf / Everbody's Golf series that Yuna comes from. Summoning a large golf club, it swings across the stage as a large pendulum, KOing those who come in contact with the club, and sending them sailing comically into the background.
| Magusar is the main antagonist of Soul Sacrifice. He was once a kind sorcerer, who was driven insane and to chaos once the world was plunged into darkness. He enslaves all those he can find, before sacrificing them in order to keep himself immortal.
Magusar's moveset is based around the use of magical spells and powers. His attacks are generally slower but much more powerful. His standard attacks are generally slower hand-to-hand punches, though occasionally his attacks involve him utilizing black orbs to deal damage to others. His stronger special moves are similar, as he uses the Giant's Arm spell for a majority of his stronger attacks. His special attacks involve him using other spells: Iron Pinwheel (firing a flurry of iron blades from above), Falcon Feather (increases his speed for a short duration), Mad Dog Maw (fire a giant roar of energy to push away fighters), and Bouldershield Fragment (which can block some projectiles).
His special move has Magusar transforming into his large dragon form, and firing a large tornado of fire from the background of the stage to KO fighters.
| "Tag" is the name given to the default playable character of ModNation Racer. Tag is a graffiti artist, and he has a love of racing. His mother, who owns a paint shop, and an old friend of her known as "the Chief" sponsor him throughout most of his racers.
Tag has two standard and stronger movesets. His special moveset involves him summoning his kart to deal damage, and summoning various props, traps, and jumps to damage his opponents. Without his kart, he is a weak fighter with very few combat options besides weak punches and kicks.
His Super Move has him drop an asphalt road over the battleground, KOing those flattened beneath it.
Third Party Characters Edit
| Spyro the Dragon is the main protagonist of the Spyro series of games. A young purple Artisan dragon, he and Sparx the Dragonfly have been together since before either of them even hatched from their eggs. Though he is young, he is quite arrogant, even denying helping those who do not wish to reward him. Despite this, he will eventually come around and aid anyone, however willingly.
Spyro's attacks all come from the various games of his series. From charge attacks to fire breath. A number of his standard attacks are kicks, tail attacks, or headbutt attacks, while his stronger standard attacks tend to knock fighters upwards so he can deal damage with his large amount of aerial capabilities.
Aether is Spyro's Super Attack. Coming from The Legend of Spyro series, Spyro's Fury Breath attack allows him to fire three large blasts of energy which KO fighters on contact.
Downloadable Characters Edit
| Young Drake is the Uncharted series' main protagonist as a teenager. Forced to live in the Saint Francis' Boys Home after his mother committed suicide, he grew up getting in fistfights with those who teased him or his family. He and his brother Samuel escaped the orphanage to track down their mother's former possessions; replacing their birth-given surnames of 'Morgan' with 'Drake' after finding her journal.
Young Drake's standard moveset is very similar to his adult counterpart's, with his attacks being performed faster but more clumsily, resulting in less damage dealt. His stronger standard attacks are based on his fistfighting skills, and his small frame allows him to easily dodge enemy attacks and counter them with kicks and powerful punches. His special moveset is vastly different from Nathan Drake's, as he primarily uses the grappling hook weapon to dish out damage from a distance.
Young Drake's Super Move has him call upon his older brother. With the two riding on the latter's motorcycle, the two brothers can drive around on it temporarily, defeating those that they crash into.
| Jodie Holmes, modelled after Ellen Paige, is the main protagonist and one of the two playable characters of the Quantic Dream-developed Beyond: Two Souls. She has a connection to an ethereal creature named Aiden, whom she was trained to cooperate with since her adolescent years.
Jodie's standard attacks have her using hand-to-hand combat in conjunction with a guitar as a battering item. Her stronger standard attacks and special attacks have her collaborate with Aiden, who she sends forwards in bursts to attack at a range. Because of Jodie's ranged attacks being stronger than her close quarters ones, she can remain out of the battle, and only approach should someone draw near her.
Jodie's Super Move has her summoning the Infraworld Entity Yé'iitsoh through a Rift. Yé'iitsoh attacks those around it by swiping it large claws to deal damage.
New Stages Edit
Returning Stages Edit
Minions are characters from a variety of Sony franchises that act as cheerleaders for the player. Unlike in the original game, Minions no longer take a super deformed art style, instead appearing as they normally would. Minions can also be called in to assist the player in dealing damage to fighters or to defend the player; classified as either Damage-type or Defence-type Minions. The ability to summon a Minion is on a time limit, beginning at 20 seconds and increasing each time a Minion is summoned in.
The player can choose to have only one Minion at a time. The Minion will appear alongside the player's character at the beginning of a match.
Computer-controlled fighters may also have randomly-chosen Minions at higher difficulties.
Playing as a character partnered with a Minion from the same series will grant them certain boosts in power; such as increasing the rate the Power Gauge fills or decreases the amount of damage taken from attacks.
