In Sonic Generations: Ultimate Edition, it is possible to unlock many things, such as character and object models with short information, music and artwork from past games, by completing missions. All missions have a time limit. The missions can be skipped with Play Coins in the 3DS version and with rings in the console version.

Unlike the console version of Sonic Generations, the missions are not needed to be completed in order to complete the story mode.
